Today is the Feast of St. Maurice, the patron of soldiers and swordsmiths. Legend has it that he was a member of the Theban Legion sent to the Rhine Danube frontier to suppress a revolt by the Bagandae in Gaul. After their victory, they were ordered to sacrifice to the gods in thanksgiving, an order they could not obey. The legion was decimated.
